The Biblical descriptions of creation accommodate the major scientific theories about the formation of the world, the age of the earth, and the advent of life.
Conversely, one can argue that God’s active participation is implicit in these theories.
The Big Bang
Someone had to conceive and produce the matter that exploded in the Big Bang. Someone had to generate the energy that caused the explosion. These things could not have materialized out of nothing.
Likewise, someone had to position the explosion within the matter properly, and calculate its power correctly, so the Big Bang could produce a viable universe.
If the Big Bang had exploded with too much energy, the result would have been nothing but dust particles flying forever outward in all directions. There would be no stars, moons, or planets.
If the Big Bang had exploded with too little energy, the result would have been big chunks of matter moving slowly outward, with little momentum. The force of gravity would have eventually collapsed these chunks back into a single mass, without creating any galaxies.
Correctly calibrating the Big Bang explosion to create the universe required a precise calculation of incredible complexity. That calculation could have only been devised by an intelligent designer. If the Big Bang occurred, God made it happen.
Genesis 1:1 abruptly declares, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Later verses say he is currently stretching out the heavens. These texts may be describing, in simple terms, the advent and aftermath of the Big Bang.
After speaking into existence the matter that comprises the world, God may have triggered an explosion that created an ever expanding universe.
Age of the Earth – Old Earth Alternative
The Bible says God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. The first six days had a morning and an evening. These demarcations are not ascribed to the seventh day.
This suggests the seventh day is still ongoing and we are currently living in it. If so, the seventh day has lasted much longer than 24 hours.
This suggests the previous six creation days may have also lasted longer than a calendar day. They may have lasted millennia.
If so, the Genesis days may reference phases in God’s creation process that generally align with the geological epochs posited by science—e.g., Ordovician, Cambrian, Jurassic, etc.
Age of the Earth – Young Earth Alternative
God exists outside the realm of time and space. To him, a single day is the same as a million years.
Just as we routinely compress data files to squeeze more information onto electronic storage devices, God may have compressed the geological epochs into six 24-hour calendar days.
The first miracle Jesus performed, when he began revealing himself as the Messiah, was to turn water into wine at a wedding in Cana. According to the head of the wedding banquet, the wine Jesus spontaneously created was the best vintage served that day.
Wine takes time to make. Good wines ferment for years. The wine Jesus created exhibited the attributes of age, even though it was only minutes old. Jesus miraculously compressed, into an instant, the time required to make fine wine.
This first miracle revealed Jesus to be the Son of God, the Creator who commands the universe. It may have also served another purpose.
Jesus may have turned the water into wine to symbolically illustrate how he compressed time to create the world in six calendar days. The quality of the wine may indicate that he created the earth with the attributes of age.
Source of Life
Life could not have spontaneously emerged from the inert matter comprising the universe. Non-living things cannot procreate life. Only living things can produce life. God—who is, always was, and forever shall be—is the logical source of life.
Those who deny God’s existence must rely on alternate explanations for the origin of life on earth.
- Life spontaneously willed itself into existence out of nothing.
- The inert elements that comprise the universe inadvertently spawned life through a series of randomly spontaneous events.
- Life existed elsewhere in the universe, blew to earth on cosmic winds, and subsequently evolved randomly.
- Life existed in a parallel universe and appeared on earth through a time or space warp.
- Someone other than God created life on earth, i.e., aliens.
- The world is unreal. We are living in a giant computer simulation created by aliens, i.e., a matrix.
Believing one of these six alternatives requires more faith than believing God is the source of life. The evidence supporting his existence is significantly greater than the evidence supporting the viability of these alternatives.
Scientists who create new organisms in laboratories inadvertently affirm that God is the source of life.
Their manual creations do not spontaneously will themselves into existence. They are not inadvertently spawned by inert matter. They do not blow into the lab through an open window. They do not suddenly appear through a time or space warp. They are not dropped off at the lab by aliens. They are not computer simulations.
Scientists use their knowledge and intelligence to intentionally formulate new life, just like God did at creation.
But unlike God, who started from scratch, scientists create new life by modifying existing organisms.
They know it would be futile to expect viable life to spontaneously emerge from an inert concoction of raw ingredients, even if they initially selected the correct materials and deliberately placed them in an ideal environment.
The existence of life, in all its amazing variations, evidences the existence of God, and affirms his role as the Creator.
The origin of life has important implications.
If God is the source of life, then we were created for a purpose. We have a divine destiny. We are objectively significant. God has awaited our existence since eternity past. Our lives are therefore precious and worthy of preservation.
If life is the product of random chance, we come into the world without purpose. We have no objective value. Our significance is subjectively determined by society, ad hoc. If this capricious appraisal ever deems us worthless, we become disposable. We are just dust in the wind.
At creation, the Bible says God spoke the various plant and animal kinds into existence—ferns, conifers, feline, equine, etc. It does not explain how he created individual species from these kinds.
Prior to the Big Flood, the Bible says Noah loaded two of every air-breathing animal kind into the ark. He did not board two of each species. Both after their initial creation and after the Big Flood, these basic kinds proliferated into vast numbers of species.
To accomplish this, God may have used an intelligent version of evolution that combined natural selection with deliberate, preplanned mutations, as opposed to the random, spontaneous, unintelligent mutations Darwin theorized.
Species evolve when cells mutate. Cells mutate in response to instructions embedded in DNA. DNA instructs cells how to behave through a message written in a distinct language that utilizes a unique alphabet.
Messages, languages, and alphabets are not random patterns that occur haphazardly in nature, like snowflakes, ocean waves, sand dunes, or clouds. They originate in a mind that intends to convey specific information to designated recipients for an express purpose.
It follows then that the mutation instructions embedded in DNA emanated from a mind that intended to convey a vital message to designated cells for an essential purpose.
The logical author of these instructions is God.
He may have designed the plant and animal kinds to propagate species through genetic mutations he deliberately programmed into their DNA at creation. He may have imbued DNA with the foreknowledge to produce millions of species, at just the proper time, when the conditions on earth were ready to support them.
If intelligent evolution is true, it is an incredibly elegant explanation for the diversity and sophistication of life on earth.
The Bible identifies the first humans as the pinnacle of God’s creation.
God formed the first male and first female through two discrete acts that were distinct from his creation of the animal kingdom. They were created as adults, not infants.
God made these special beings in his image and gave them dominion over the rest of creation. Their design and authority distinguished them from the other types of life he created.
These characteristics indicate the first humans were unique creations, not products of an evolutionary process that began with lower life forms. Several Bible verses implicitly support this idea.
