The Bible accommodates the major scientific theories about the formation of the world, the age of the earth, and the evolution of organisms within kinds, excluding humankind.
The Bible indicates that humans are unique creations, not products of an evolutionary process that began with lower life forms.
The Bible does not support any secular theories about the origin of life. Instead, it clearly states that God is the source of all life.
God’s active participation is implicit in the popular creation theories. Scientists indirectly affirm that he is the source of all life.
The Big Bang
The Big Bang could have only occurred with God’s active participation.
Someone had to conceive and produce the matter that exploded. Someone had to generate the energy that caused the explosion. These things could not have materialized out of nothing.
Likewise, someone had to position the explosion within the matter properly and calculate its power correctly so that the Big Bang would produce a viable universe.
If the Big Bang had exploded with too much energy, the result would have been nothing but dust particles flying forever outward in all directions. There would be no stars, moons, or planets.
If the Big Bang had exploded with too little energy, the result would have been big chunks of matter moving slowly outward with little momentum. Gravitational force would have eventually pulled these chunks back into a single mass without creating any galaxies.
Correctly calibrating the Big Bang explosion to create the universe required a precise calculation of incredible complexity. Only an intelligent designer could have devised this calculation. If the Big Bang occurred, God made it happen.
Genesis 1:1 abruptly declares, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” A later verse says he is currently stretching out the heavens. These texts may be describing, in simple terms, the Big Bang and its aftermath.
After speaking into existence the matter that comprises the world, God may have triggered an explosion that created an ever-expanding universe.
Age of the Earth
The Bible allows for the possibility that the earth is extremely old, but it also suggests that our planet is quite young.
Old Earth Alternative
The Bible says God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. The first six days had a morning and an evening. These demarcations are not ascribed to the seventh day.
This means the seventh day is still ongoing, and we are currently living in it. As such, the seventh day has lasted much longer than 24 hours.
This suggests that the six previous creation days also lasted longer than a calendar day. They could have lasted millennia.
If so, the Genesis days may reference phases in God’s creation process that generally align with the geological eras posited by science—e.g., Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic.
Young Earth Alternative
God exists outside the realm of time and space. To him, a single second is the same as a million years.
Just as we compress data files to squeeze more information onto electronic storage devices, God may have compressed the geological eras into short phases so the world would quickly reach its current state.
The first miracle Jesus performed at the inception of his earthly ministry was to turn water into wine at a wedding in Cana. According to the head of the wedding banquet, the wine Jesus spontaneously created was the best vintage served that day.
Wine takes time to make. Excellent wines ferment for years. The wine Jesus created exhibited the attributes of age even though it was only minutes old. Jesus miraculously compressed into an instant the time required to make fine wine.
This first miracle introduced Jesus to the world as the Son of God, the creator of the universe. It may have also served another purpose.
Jesus may have turned the water into wine to reveal that he compressed time when he commanded each aspect of the world to exist. The quality of the wine may indicate that he created the earth with the attributes of age, e.g., coal, oil, fossils.
Source of Life
The Bible says God is the source of all life. Scientists indirectly affirm this truth in the lab.
Life Begets Life
Life could not have spontaneously emerged from the inert matter that comprises the universe. Non-living things cannot procreate life. Only living things can generate new life. God—who is, always was, and forever shall be—is the logical source of all life.
Those who deny God’s existence must rely on alternate explanations for the origin of life on earth.
- Life spontaneously willed itself into existence out of nothing.
- The inert elements that comprise the universe inadvertently spawned life on earth through a series of random events.
- Life existed elsewhere in the universe, blew to earth on cosmic winds, and subsequently evolved mindlessly.
- Life existed in a parallel universe and appeared on earth through a time or space warp.
- Someone other than God created life on earth, i.e., aliens.
- The world is unreal. We are living in a giant computer simulation created by aliens, i.e., a matrix.
Believing one of these six explanations requires more faith than believing that God is the source of all life. The evidence supporting his existence is significantly greater than the evidence supporting the viability of these alternatives.
Scientists who create new organisms in laboratories indirectly affirm, by their methodologies, that God is the source of all life.
Their manual creations do not spontaneously will themselves into existence. They are not inadvertently spawned by inert matter. They do not blow into the lab through an open window. They do not suddenly appear through a time or space warp. They are not dropped off at the lab by aliens. They are not computer simulations.
Scientists use their knowledge and imagination to intentionally form new organisms, just like God did at creation. Unlike him, however, they create new life forms by modifying existing ones. God started from scratch.
Scientists know it would be futile to expect viable life forms to spontaneously emerge from an inert mix of raw ingredients, even if they selected the correct materials and placed them in an ideal environment.
The existence of life, in all its variations, evidences the existence of God and his role as our creator.
The origin of life has important implications.
If God is the source of all life, then he created us for a purpose. We have a divine destiny. Each of us is objectively significant and endowed with inherent dignity. Therefore, our lives are precious and worthy of preservation.
If we are products of random chance, then we come into the world without purpose. We have no objective value. Our significance is subjectively determined ad hoc by others. If this capricious appraisal ever deems us worthless, we become disposable.
The Bible supports the intelligent evolution of organisms within their kinds, excluding humankind. Genetic materials evidence God’s involvement in this process.
The Bible says God created the plant and animal kinds—e.g., conifer, fern, feline, equine—by commanding them to exist. It does not address the creation of species.
Before the Big Flood, Noah loaded two of every air-breathing animal kind into the ark. He did not board two of each species.
Both after their initial creation and after the Big Flood, these kinds proliferated into a vast array of species.
The Bible does not explain how this propagation occurred, but we can speculate based on what we know about genetics and knowledge transfer.
These things indicate that God generated plant and animal species within their kinds by using an intelligent version of evolution that employed deliberate mutations, as opposed to the random mutations that Darwin theorized.
Species evolve when cells mutate. Cells mutate in response to instructions that are embedded in genetic materials, e.g., DNA, RNA.
Genetic materials tell cells how to behave through a recognizable message written in a prescribed language that utilizes a unique alphabet.
Alphabets are not natural phenomena. Coherent instructional messages do not randomly occur in nature.
They originate in the mind of a composer who wants to deliver specific information to designated recipients for an express purpose.
It follows then that the mutation instructions embedded in genetic materials emanated from the rational mind of an author who wanted to convey evolutionary knowledge to individual cells so they would respond accordingly and produce desired changes.
Thus, genetic materials evidence the existence of God. Only he could have conceived and encoded their messages. This means he scripted the mutation instructions that evolved plant and animal species within their kinds.
The Bible is unclear about when natural selection, i.e., the survival of the fittest, became part of the evolutionary process.
God created humans to live forever. We became subject to death when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit.
We do not know if he designed other organisms with the same longevity in mind. We do not know if anything died before Adam and Eve’s original sin.
If nothing died, then the plant and animal kinds that God initially commanded to exist could have propagated new species without any failures until Adam and Eve sinned.
And individual organisms would have procreated continuously from their inception until death appeared on the scene.
This generative productivity would have expedited the proliferation and dispersion of new species and breeds around the world.
But even if plants and animals have always been subject to death, intelligent evolution still accounts for their countless permutations in times past and today.
Scientists are still deciphering genetic materials. We have much to learn about the evolutionary capabilities God built into them.
We do not know if God originally authored DNA with exhaustive instructions to produce every mutation he ever envisioned. Or if he actively edited it along the way to generate new species as desired.
Or if he encoded general mutation instructions into DNA at creation but made them sufficiently comprehensive and dynamic so that organisms could evolve in response to environmental changes without his subsequent input.
The Bible indicates that the scourge of evil damaged genetic materials. God programmed them to generate perfect results. He did not script them to produce congenital disorders and malformations.
We do not know if this evil impaired some of the evolutionary capabilities God designed into genetic materials and thereby slowed or prevented the introduction of new species.
We do not know if it limited the adaptability of genetic materials, which may have led to the demise of certain species in times past.
We do know enough about genetic materials, however, to realize that God’s intelligent version of evolution is an incredibly elegant explanation for the diversity and sophistication of the plant and animal life on earth.
The Bible identifies Adam and Eve, the first humans, as the pinnacle of God’s creation.
He formed them through two discrete acts that were distinct from his creation of the animal kingdom. He created them male and female as adults, not infants.
God made Adam and Eve in his image on a soulful level and gave them dominion over creation, so they could manage it as they saw fit.
Their unique inception, divine resemblance, esteemed position, and managerial responsibilities distinguished them from the other kinds of animal life that God made.
These distinctions indicate that Adam and Eve were unique creations, not products of an evolutionary process that began with lower life forms.
Several Bible verses implicitly support this idea.
